In the Saint Francis church at Arquata, there is a piece of cloth with a printed human body shape just like the Sacred Shroud of Torino. This shroud is not a copy of the original it is really an “extract”, just as it is written on the cloth itself: “EXTRACTUM AB ORIGINALI”. That is to say that in 1655, as written on a papyrus that explains about the relic, a cloth with of the same size of the Sacred Shroud of Torino was placed over it (all this was done in the presence of a special commission for this case requested by bishop Bucciarelli), following this operation, the image from the initial shroud was printed on the second one.
The method used to obtain this image is not known and neither is known the cause or causes that motivated this action. It is believed that this action came out because the church did not well accepted that the Shroud of Torino was owned by the Savoia family and therefore it wanted to have one of its own, that could be used in alternative in case the original could be lost or destroyed. No one really knew about the existing of the shroud, which was very jealously conserved by the franciscans priests. This shroud was found by accident when restoration works were being done in the church. It was found inside a golden urn in a niche in the base of a wooden altar.
The shroud is now kept and exposed inside the Saint Francis church. And, this shroud being an extract and not a copy of the original, keeps an infinitesimal part of the blood of Jesus.
That makes the shroud, for the worshippers, a very important relic and for the those who are not believers a precious historic and national document.
